Summer ‘Shine: Perfect Cool-Down Mixes

Published by Broadslab Distillery

It’s not over yet—summer that is—and there’s a few steamy weeks ahead. So why not cool down with a bottle of Premium Broadslab whiskey mixed into an amazing cocktail?

What exactly is a cocktail? The definition of a cocktail is any stimulating spirit, sugar, water and bitters. Creatively blending other ingredients into straight whiskies to “knock off the edge” has been popular for centuries. But only in the 17th and 18th centuries the first cocktails became popular enough to be recorded. The name “cocktail” has many different origins, but the most popular involves the garnishment of these mixed drinks with a rooster’s colorful and fanciful tail feathers!

Whiskey is a fabulous spirit to mix into cocktails. It compliments many flavors, from fruity to sweet to dry. There are “standard” whiskey drinks such as Whiskey Sours, Manhattans, and Highballs, but there are many other “standard” cocktails that use specific types of whiskey such as Canadian, Scotch, Irish, bourbon, or rye—each bringing its own characteristics to the drink.

Here are two refreshingly “cool” drinks to enjoy with Premium Broadslab whiskies—one that is easy to make and another that is more challenging, but is as equally invigorating:

The Red Snappermakes 1 serving

1 jigger (1.5 fluid ounce) of Broadslab Legacy Shine or Broadslab Legacy Reserve

1 jigger of amaretto liquor

4 fluid ounces of cranberry juice

Fill a tall glass with ice; pour in whiskey and amaretto; fill to top with cranberry juice; stir and enjoy!

Whiskey Slushmakes 4 servings

¼ can (12 fluid ounces) of frozen lemonade

¼ can (6 fluid ounces) of frozen orange juice concentrate

1/3 cup plus 1 tablespoon strong brewed black tea

3 tablespoon plus ½ teaspoon white cane sugar

1/3 cup and 1 tablespoon Broadslab Carolina Coast Silver Rum or our Carolina Coast Artisan Crafted Spiced-Rum

1-1/3 cups plus 1 tablespoon of water

¼ liter of ginger ale soda

½ lemon cut into wedges for garnish

In a plastic container, combine lemonade concentrate, orange juice concentrate, tea, sugar, whiskey and water. Mix well and freeze for 24 hours. Scoop into tall glass, ¾ full, and pour ginger ale to fill the glass. Stir and garnish with lemon wedges.

No matter whether you try out these recipes or come up with your own—be sure to use our Premium Broadslab whiskies in your cocktails and cool-down your summer!
